SAFE DRIVING OF HEAVY VEHICLES OPITO Approved (9077)
This OPITO-approved program is aimed at improving the knowledge, confidence, and safety awareness of operators of heavy vehicles. Following OPITO Standard, the course equips the participants with skills in hazard perception, defensive driving, and vehicle inspection and emergency handling. Emphasizing regional laws and safe industry practices, this course further enables a driver to confidently operate a heavy vehicle on a difficult worksite.
COURSE OUTLINE - MODULES
- The module focuses on safe driving practices inside restricted and high-risk operational areas.
- Participants will learn about site-specific traffic rules, hazards identification and awareness, speed management, and the importance of looking out at all times for activities involving heavy equipment around the trucking areas.
- The course ensures good safety measures in handling loads properly and correctly, including charging the loading and unloading of cargo and carrying passengers. Weight distribution, load restraints, passenger safety measures, and safety considerations while in transit are stressed.
- The module shall provide strategies for avoiding hazards and minimizing the occurrence of accidents.
- Participants will learn how to anticipate hazards; maintain safe distances; and adjust their speed accordingly with respect to various road conditions while making decisions.
- The module focuses on the human element in driving safety, while driver health; fatigue management; and fitness to drive are treated. Journey management is also introduced.
- This module gives the driver a comprehensive experience in studying heavy vehicle characteristics, working systems, and safety features, ensuring that learners are conversant with vehicle inspections, vehicle dynamics, handling, and maintenance checks required to operate heavy vehicles safely and in accordance with the law.
- practical assessment module in which participants must demonstrate proficiency by driving in real or simulated environments, accomplishing a safe manner of maneuvering, hazards recognition, and road rule compliance, all with an intent of defensive driving techniques to ensure that one is fit to be on the road.
